Hammarby and Fredrikstad would both be reasonably satisfied with their 90 minutes work after this game at Rasunda finished 2-1 to the home side.  Bajen were looking very good to progress when they were two goals to the good but a stunning late strike from Kvisik ensured the visitors went home happy.  The match took a while to get going but Hammarby were looking secure after a good spell either side of half time.  However they tailed off a little after getting their second goal and Fredrikstad came back into the game.  Kvisik's late strike gave them a deserved reward for their effort and both sides will now fancy their chances of progressing after the second leg in Norway.

The home side chose to keep Lekstrom in goals even though Hellstrom was available again and though the deputy hasn't looked outstanding in every game he has played he will take a boost from this vote of confidence.  Sleyman joined Emil Johansson in missing out from the defence with injury so along with Traore standing in, Joakim Jensen was taken off the bench to play at full back.  As a midfielder he did very well in his makeshift position.  Castro-Tello was also given a rare run out from the start in place of Eguren in midfield.  The visitors were able to select Shaaban despite the 'keeper having a very minor knock early in the week but Gashi was left in midfield with Elyounoussi moving into the central quartet while West partnered Johannson in attack.

The match took a while to get going and there was little goalmouth action at either end in the first half hour.  That changed when Laitinen fed Paulinho but the striker saw his shot saved by Shaaban.  However when Paulinho got a second bite at the cherry moments later he made no mistake.  Johansson found him with a cross and a superb volleyed finish left Shaaban helpless.  The Swedish 'keeper could do nothing about another volleyed goal when Castro-Tello doubled the lead shortly after the break but going two up so soon probably disadvantaged Bajen.  It was too early for them to shut up shop but similarly they didn't want to throw men forward and risk being hit on the break.  Inevitably Fredrikstad edged themselves slowly back into the game and though they struggled to create chances there was always a feeling they'd score.  Kvisik finally supplied the goal when he thumped a long range shot beyond Hellstrom but neither side would commit men forward in search of another goal and the match drizzled out.

Hammarby will be happy have a lead to defend in Norway for the second leg but that late goal they conceded could prove costly.  Fredrikstad will be pleased at only having to make up a single goal defecit and they did secure a crucial away strike.  They too will fancy their chances of progressing but this tie is still in the balance and could go the whole distance before finally being decided.
