Les Mauves et Blancs hold on to earn a draw in Bordeaux, and advance to the next round of the Uefa Cup with a 3-2 aggregate win. The score finished 1-1 after an ill-tempered second leg in the Stade Chaban Delmas. Thomas Chatelle put Anderlecht in front after the half hour mark, and gave the visitors the narrowest of leads going into the break. Bordeaux battled back in the second half, and a brace of substitutions made by French coach Laurent Blanc changed the course of the contest. It was a busy night for referee Dereli Selcuk, who had a tough job trying to control a game that constantly threatened to boil over. No less than eleven yellow cards were shown during the game. Bordeaux substitute Fernando Cavenaghi handed Les Girondins a lifeline, when he equalized for the home side with twenty minutes still on the clock. However, a lack of discipline made the French side's task all but impossible when both Tremoulinas and Chalme were sent off late in the game. Anderlecht were able to weather the storm for the last minutes of the game, and ensure a next round tie against Bayern Munich.
Anderlecht took the slenderest of leads to face a Bordeaux side riding high in the French League. With the score at 2-1 after the first leg in Brussels last week, the tie was still there for the taking for both sides. The pressure of the situation was evident in a cagey, and largely uneventful, first half an hour. Anderlecht coach Ariel Jacobs had insisted prior to the game that his side would not sit back and defend their narrow lead, and this proved to be the case as the visitors broke the deadlock. Thomas Chatelle swept the opening goal home, after he capitalized on a beautiful move constructed by Serhat Akin and Mbark Boussoufa. The away goal was significant as it meant going in at half time that Bordeaux needed to score twice in the second half to take the tie into extra time.
Bordeaux coach Laurent Blanc was forced to change things after the break, as his side went in search of the two vital goals. The introduction of Johan Micoud and Fernando Cavenaghi altered the tempo of the game, and put Anderlecht on the back foot. A sustained period of pressure by Bordeaux after the hour mark, resulted in the home side pulling a goal back through Cavenaghi. The Argentine striker latched onto an inch perfect pass from defender Mathieu Chalme, and slide the ball pass Zitka in the Anderlecht goal. However, whatever slim hopes this equalizer had given the French were quickly extinguished after Benoit Tremoulinas received a straight red card two minutes later. Referee Dereli Selcuk had had to make a series of bookings through out a game that was quickly descending into a battle. Both sides had a number of players booked during the course of the game, with eleven yellow cards shown before the final whistle. The absence of discipline hit Bordeaux hardest, as Chalme's dismissal, for a second bookable offence, sealed the French side's fate. Anderlecht hung on against the nine men of Bordeaux to advance through to the next round 3-2 on aggregate.
All in all, the result was a fair one, as Anderlecht had been the better side over the two legs. The significance of the match can explain the lack of discipline on the part of both sides, but Bordeaux's failure to finish the game with eleven men, meant the French side never had much of a chance of over-hauling Anderlecht's lead. Ariel Jacobs will hope to build on the success of this result, and transfer this good form to the Belgian side's Jupiler League campaign. For Bordeaux, this exit from the Uefa Cup forces the French team to concentrate on their domestic competitions. Anderlecht will meet German giants Bayern Munich in the next round, in what promises to be an exciting tie.
