Getafe's incredible adventure in this season's UEFA Cup took another twist when Cosmin Contra's cute last-minute chip earnt Michael Laudrup's men a 1-1 draw against Bundesliga leaders Bayern, giving them the upper hand for ahead of the return leg in Madrid next week. Luca Toni had earlier risen the highest to head Bayern in front in the first half, before the Bavarians missed several excellent chances to all but finish the tie.
Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld surprised few with his team selection, although Lukas Podolski was preferred to Miroslav Klose alongside Luca Toni in attack. Five of their line up have featured in a World Cup final, whilst Mark van Bommel and Oliver Kahn can both boast Champions League winners' medals. Getafe, on the other hand, are novices at this level. In addition, they were without Belenguer, Cata Diaz and Lucas Licht from their defence. Oscar Ustari was chosen ahead of Pato Abbondanzieri in goal.
In the driving rain, the visitors froze in the early stages. Ribery was a constant menace down the left, although David Cortes battled on manfully with his task of man marking the French star. He, Toni and Podolski all enjoyed chances in the opening stages, before the goal they deserved finally arrived shortly before the half hour mark. Bastian Schweinsteiger's corner from the right found its way to the back post, where Toni was not unmarked but predictably outjumped his marker to power home the opener. It seemed for all the world that that goal would be the first of several, that we were witnessing the beginning of the end of the Spaniards' European campaign. However, that goal changed the game the other way. Getafe immediatley took a grip of the game, and centre half Mario Alvarez enjoyed two fine opportunities before the break. First, his header from a corner was cleared off the line, unwittingly, by Lahm. Then, he almost diverted an Albin effort into the net.
After the break, as the rain intensified, the game flowed from end to end. Getafe pressed, with Uche holding the ball up well for the visitors. He outclassed two defenders in the home box, and layed the ball into the path of the inrushing Casquero, who shot over when it seemed easier to score. Bayern were now playing on the break, and they twice left the visitors badly exposed. First Van Bommel played in Toni in a great position, but the pass was just behind the big Italian, and Getafe got enough men back to clear. Then, Ribery wasted an equally great chance. Yet Laudrup's men just never gave up. Manu del Moral hit the bar with a header from close range as Kahn flapped in no-man's land. Most teams might have accepted that it wasn't to be, but they kept going, and in the last minute, as Bayern struggled to clear, Contra sent a delicate chip over two defenders, with Kahn again out of sight. Cue delirium amongst the small away support.
It is all finely poised for next week at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez, and after the comments attributed to Franz Beckenbauer recently claiming he had never heard of Getafe before, everyone in Bavaria has now, of that there is no doubt.
