Wolfsburg made no mistake in the 2nd leg and claimed their place in the group stage of the Uefa Cup with a 1-1 draw away at Rapid Bucharest. The visitors were in control after an early goal from Grafite had given them the lead while Bucharest had little to offer. The equalizer from Joao Paulo came too late to make an impact as the hosts would have needed 2 further goals to progress which was never going to happen.

Rapid coach Jose Peseiro, who was under pressure after 3 defeats in the last 4 league games, made 4 changes compared to the first leg as Elinton Andrade, Joao Paulo, Lazar and Boya all claimed starting places. Wolfsburg coach Magath on the other hand made 2 changes to the team that lost at Karlsruhe in the Bundesliga as Ricardo Costa and Dzeko replaced Madlung and Dejagah.

Wolfsburg basically gained the upper hand from the start on with a high ball circulation while Bucharest were forced to react only. A first header from Grafite just missed target, while the hosts also came to their first chance when Claudio Pitbull missed target with a shot. The visitors took an early lead than when Grafite showed his class as he outplayed his defender and hammered the ball into the back of the net. Misimovic nearly added a 2nd goal, but saw his free kick saved by goalkeeper Andrade as the visitors dictated the first half  while they took a 1 goal lead into the break.

The Wolves should have doubled their lead right after the break when a fine pass from Misimovic put Dzeko eye to eye with Andrade while after an hour of play Josue missed the next chance for the visitors. With 20 minutes remaining the hosts suddenly came level when goalkeeper Benaglio failed to hold on to a cross and Joao Paulo scored the equalizer. The hosts found new hope now and pushed for further goals as they would have needed 2 more to advance. That was never going to happen though as Julio Cesar and Boya both missed their efforts.

There is no doubt that Wolfsburg were the stronger side in both legs while they were dominant and missed plenty of chances to seal a win in this 2nd leg. The equalizer of Rapid Bucharest came far too late to make an impact as the Wolves advance to the group stage of the Uefa Cup.
