Hamburger SV also win their second leg against NEC and advance to the next round. Olic scored the only goal of the match after nine minutes of play. The hosts controlled the match pretty comfortably and accounted for the better chances. NEC tried their best but it just wasn't good enough. The Nijmegen outfit will exit the UEFA Cup with their heads held up high. They had a good campaign and simply had to yield to the German superior side. Hamburger did what they had to do over two matches and didn't waste too much energy while doing so as they are still competiting for the championship in the Bundesliga.

Coach Jol fielded a strong line up again despite the comfortable margin they build up in The Netherlands. Olic and Petric were in the attack again while Janssen and Jarolim featured on the midfield. Nijmegen coach Been did rest a few of his players. Sibum, Schone and Radomski had played a lot of matches lately and picked up minor complaints along the way. Since NEC was almost certain of their exit he decided to give some other players a chance. He fired up his squad nonetheless as they wanted to give their fans one last good match.

After only nine minutes even the last remains of hope were killed off by Olic though. Jarolim captured the ball on midfield and sent Olic into the box with a nice pass. The latter kept his nerve and put the ball behind Babos with a nice left foot shot. Jol's outfit comfortably controlled the match and created a few more chances through Olic and Janssen. On the other side NEC tried their best to score at least one goal. El Kabir came closest as his twenty yard shot bounced off the post five minutes before the break. In the second half more of the same could be seen. Hamburger SV held the initiative and almost doubled the lead as Petroipa hit the cross bar with a cracking shot. NEC's best chance came from the feet of El Kabir again. The unpredictable forward was unlucky again as he found the post for the second time as he tried to put the ball behind Rost. Eventually neither side managed to find the net again and Olic's first half goal proved to be decisive.

Hamburger SV were pretty much through to the next stage after their first leg in Nijmegen. They did well to make the second leg no more than a formality. Jol fielded a strong line up nonetheless and this match will only give them some more confidence and rhythm for the games to come. NEC fought hard over the two matches but the difference in quality was just too big and this is as far as a relatively mediocre Eredivisie side can get in the UEFA Cup. The team can now focus on the domestic league again to qualify for next year's tournament.
