Udinese were made to work hard by Lech Poznan but they still did enough to progress to the next round of the UEFA Cup in what was an otherwise bad night for Italian football.  Sampdoria, Fiorentina and Milan all went crashing out and when Lech took a first half lead Udinese must have strongly feared that they could be joining them.  However they did manage to equalise in the second half and that would have put them through on away goals even before Di Natale scored a late winner.  With little to play for in the league, it was not surprising Udinese were determined to win this tie but while they were good enough to overcome Lech, it is hard to see them having enough to make a real impression on the tournament. 

The home side were without Handanovic who was injured so Belardi played in goals.  Domizzi, who is now banned domestically, came into the defence for Felipe while only Isla was rested from the strongest midfield as Asamoah took his place beside Inler and D'Agostino.  In the attack Pepe, Di Natale and Quagliarella were named as a strong trio although Floro Flores did come off the bench at half time.  Sanchez was banned so missed out.  Lech lined up in a 4-5-1 formation with Lewandowski supporting Rengifo in the attack.  Peszko was suspended for the first leg but though he came back for this tie he was hampered by a bad injury picked up in training and he didn't make it off the substitutes bench.

Udinese had an early fright when Stilic had a shot cleared off the line but the visitors did take the lead they probably deserved when Rengifo controlled the ball on the edge of the box and sent a delightful finish beyond Belardi.  D'Agostino wasted a set piece and Quagliarella's touch let him down as Udinese gradually came back into things.  The second half didn't start at a particularly high tempo but there was huge relief for the home fans when Pepe capitalised on some poor defending to convert a cross.  There were half chances at either end but Udinese were now well on top and some good play by Asamoah set himself up for a chance but he fired his shot against the bar.  Udinese were worthy of the win and they finally got it in injury time.  Di Natale scored the goal to clinch progression to the next round but the result was definitely better than the majority of the performance.

This wasn't a brilliant display from Udinese but they did manage to wear their opponents down and in the end the result was deserved.  Lech can be proud of their efforts and though they did go out eventually they went very close to causing a shock against a decent side from a league much better than their own.
