Osasuna take a commanding lead back to Spain after one early and two late goals against Bayer Leverkusen (0-1ht, 0-3ft). Leverkusen's shaky defence saw them punished; for all their possession, this was not the strong performance the German fans were hoping for, with the defence and players like Rolfes and Schneider being ineffectual. For Osasuna, they had some defensive frailties themselves but the attacking prowess of Juanfran, Milosevic and Soldado in particular saw them impress for spells in the game and to score three away from home was, while a bit excessive, indicative of their superiority.
Osasuna lined up 4-4-2, reserve player Erice making his second appearance of the season with Punal and Nekounam still out. Juanfran roved up the flanks on those occasions that Osasuna attacked in earnest; often they tried a long ball to Soldado, who performed admirably well considering his marking, with Milosevic having an effective return to action. Substitute Webo, of course, impressed with a goal within seconds of coming on. Leverkusen looked very nervous and disjointed to begin with, but soon began to attack, with fast balls down the flanks and some good crosses across goal from both sides, but offered precious little composure - or indeed support - in front of goal. They tailed off badly; Schneider and Voronin were anonymous for much of the game and while Barbarez and Barnetta were involved heavily early on, the heads went down and Leverkusen deservedly lost.
Osasuna took the lead before the state of play had even been established, David Lopez's corner being met beautifully by Cuellar, who headed home. The home crowd began to voice its frustration as their heroes struggled to create chances, but soon after, the game sprung into life for both sides. Juanfran then beautifully set up Soldado, who wasted a free header just five yards out, but Leverkusen immediatley counterattacked through Barbarez and Kiessling, very nearly creating an equaliser. Around the 25 minute mark, the game began to slow down and the defences gained some more confidence both at the back and at the front; Corrales and Castro, for the visitors and hosts respectively, were showing plenty of ability, the latter crossing nicely for Barbarez, who headed wide. But it stayed 1-0 to Osasuna until the half time whistle with no more clear-cut chances, Leverkusen wasting their possession.
Leverkusen started the second half quite well, but their best chance came through Juan on the hour mark; Gorka was the equal of the finish. Bayer continued to press until Osasuna killed the game off with a well-worked team effort. Valdo's cross was met by Milosevic; he unselfishly laid the ball off for Lopez to hammer home. Two minutes later, Webo came on and scored with his first real touch. Milosevic, impressive in Europe this season, again impressed with a pass from the left to Webo, who effortlessly chipped the ball over the 'keeper. Frustration - and timewasting - began to mount for the respective sides, but nobody could add to the 0-3 scoreline.
Bayer will be deeply disappointed with this scoreline; their superb home form was nowhere to be seen as they struggled to make the most of the ball, and went down as a result. As for Osasuna, the opening goal preceded an exciting game for them where they definitley took their chances; while 3-0 may flatter them a bit, they deserved the win and will really fancy their chances back in Spain now.
