The 2022/23 season was a season of two halves for Atletico Madrid. They started terribly and were outside of the Champions League positions during the World Cup pause, but they then collected the most points of all LaLiga teams over the second half of the season after returning to a back three system. Ultimately, Atletico Madrid finished third last term, but they were actually so close to finishing second, and ahead of Real Madrid, on the final day. Given how well they ended last term, there is confidence at the club and they will once again look to challenge the big two for silverware. It has been a positive transfer market overall, as they’ve cut lose a few of last season’s non-performers and have majorly reinforced the defence with the likes of Javi Galan, Caglar Soyuncu and Cesar Azpilicueta. The defence was a weakness for Atletico Madrid last season, which is incredible to say given how this used to be their main strength and almost entire ethos. But, the defensive reinforcements should help that. As for their strengths, it’s all about Antoine Griezmann. The Frenchman had arguably his best ever season in 2022/23 and gives them the ability to make something happen in attack at any moment.

Target


Silverware of any kind. Diego Simeone has now been in charge at Atletico Madrid for 11 full seasons and has finished top three in each of them, so that’s no longer the target but the bare minimum. The target will be silverware of any kind. Ideally that’d be the league, but they’ll likely take the Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup really seriously.
