Clyde deservedly won promotion from League Two last season and will be seeking to consolidate themselves in the third flight under the guidance of Danny Lennon and assistant boss Allan Moore. Both men have been around the block and are well aware of what is required at this level of the game and should be capable of extracting the maximum from their squad. In terms of players who have gone, there are perhaps only a handful of consequence. League Two goalkeeper of the year Blair Currie was released and has been joined at Stirling by solid defensive midfielder Kevin Nicoll, but the club felt they could upgrade in both areas. Meanwhile, centre-back Tom Lang has gone to Dunfermline. Lennon has mainly reinforced by signing the cream of the League Two sides who did not win promotion. Talented forward Darren Smith has joined from Stirling, with the former Motherwell man well capable of finding the net, though he is a little prone to injury. Further bolstering their attack, which will once again be led by David Goodwillie – a highly talented performer even a league further up – will be former Annan players Tony Wallace and Chris Johnston. While it has been Wallace who has impressed in the League Cup, Johnston is the player who proved himself more capable last season. Bolstering the defence, meanwhile, is Craig Howie from East Kilbride, a player untested at this level, while goalkeeper David Mitchell has arrived from Falkirk, having previously had a successful spell at Stranraer. Although the squad is small, it is packed with experience. John Rankin, formerly of Hibs, is an excellent player in the heart of the field, while Ally Love is another very useful asset. In defence, meanwhile, Martin McNiff and Scott Rumsby are both redoubtable players who are strong foundation points to build a team around.

Target

A lack of depth is Clyde’s biggest problem but they may be giving themselves room to dip into the loan market. This squad should be capable of surviving – and comfortably so.
