Magdeburg did enough to survive relegation last season but performances dropped considerably overall from the previous campaign. Despite dominating possession in many games, their soft-underbelly was often exposed, a recurring theme under coach Christian Titz since returning to the second tier. There were some rumbles of discontent among supporters last season but Titz is still considered the man for the job, which is understandable as he did take the club back up from the third division a few years back. A poor start ,however, could see his position come under threat. There is no doubt Magdeburg play some pretty stuff at times, but they lack ruthlessness in the final-third. The club have looked to address this in the summer with new signings Kaars and Marusic, both leading goalscorers for their clubs last season. Schuler has left for Hertha but his loss of form was evident in the second-half of the last campaign. There have been many more new faces so Magdeburg could be stronger if the new players can adjust. Leipertz from Paderborn is a good purchase, providing he can rediscover his form. Mathisen should strengthen the defence while right-midfielder Hercher should provide some extra pace. The leadership in the team could be an issue if things don't go well, especially with the loss of captain Conde and defensive chief Elfadli. They will also need to cut-out the defensive errors that were all too common last term.

Target

Magdeburg have the capabilities to be a top-half team but it all depends on how the newcomers fare. A good start will lift the confidence but the opposite and it could be another long season.
