Lille enjoyed a positive first season under manager Paulo Fonseca as they finished fifth in Ligue 1 – arguably punching slightly above their weight in the Portuguese’s first term in charge. After a weak defence of their shock title, won in 2020/21, this was more like what was expected of the club. Maintaining that standard, though, will be another difficult challenge with a squad that could use another couple of bodies before the season begins. They have seen five established first-team players from last season depart, arguably the most pressing of which is central midfielder Andre Gomes, who was only on loan anyway. Otherwise, the squad has had a refreshing clearout, with Timo Weah, Jose Fonte, Jonathan Bamba and Jonas Martin departing. These players were perhaps past their sell-by date at the club. Lille do not appear to have depleted them particularly well, though. Samuel Umtiti comes in on a free transfer from Barcelona, but after impressing at Lecce last season, he must prove his ability to stay fit. Hakon Arnar Haraldsson has arrived from Copenhagen to add more threat in midfield, but Lille have paid a big price for a player who is untested at any level of note. His versatility, though, will help a team lacking in numbers. The players Lille do have, though, are of a high standard. There are few clear weaknesses in the squad, although goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier is still a little raw and can make unforced errors. The defence, meanwhile, was hit by injury issues last season and will benefit if these do not return – albeit Tiago Djalo is set for the sidelines for some time yet. The midfield is lacking in numbers in a defensive capacity, with an apparent expectation that teenager Carlos Baleba will step up this season. There is no lack of creativity and scoring power, particularly if Jonathan David remains at the club – although it is surprising the Canada international remains.

Target

Lille will be aiming for Europe again. Given their lack of numbers just now, it will likely be beyond them, but if they can add some strong squad players to their unit, Paulo Fonseca’s side have the capacity to replicate last season’s achievement.
