Sutton United’s first ever season in the Football League was one to remember, even if it ultimately ended in double disappointment. History was made in 2021 when the U’s lifted the National League title for the first time and they were prompted to the Football League. The small club based in the Surrey commuter belt overcame several challenges to outperform bigger and more illustrious club. They ripped up their 3G surface and are slowly bringing their home up to the required standard. They were seconds away from lifting the EFL Trophy at Wembley before being beaten in extra time by League One Rotherham United. They then missed out on a play-off place on the final day of the season by just a single point. They can count themselves incredibly unlucky and they deserved more for their efforts. Manager Matt Gray deserves all the plaudits coming his way and has enhanced his reputation. He remained loyal to the players which took them into the Football League and was rewarded with some impressive displays. Winger David Ajiboye was one of their stand-out performers and it has earned him a summer move to League One side Peterborough United. His loss is a real blow for Gray, despite a handsome transfer fee. He is one of a trio of notable departures with goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis making a surprise switch to Championship side Reading and striker Isaac Olaofe making an expected return to parent club Millwall following a second successive loan. Former Walsall goalkeeper Jack Rose will take over from Bouzanis, full-back Sam Hart is a smart signing from relegated Oldham Athletic whilst striker Kwarme Thomas will be hoping to reignite his career.

Target

Play-offs. There is no reason why Gray’s side can’t go one better this time around and finish in the top seven.
