Wolfsberger are coming from a rather disappointing 2017/18 campaign which saw them only come to life in the late stages of the season, when there was nothing to play for. Their upturn in fortunes came following the dismissal of Heimo Pfeifenberger as their manager, but the good results were not enough for caretaker Robert Ibertsberger to be given the job on a permanent basis, as the club announced that Hartberg's miracle worker Christian Ilzer will be in charge in the new season. Given that Pfeifenberger was the league's longest-serving manager when receiving the boot, there was little surprise that Ilzer opted to conduct a squad clear-out and make the squad his own. Numerous players who were regulars last season were allowed to leave, while Ilzer has opted to mostly bring in players with Bundesliga experience, while also bringing in three men who he is well familiar with in Manfred Gollner, Sven Sprangler and Stefan Golles, who he managed at Hartberg last season. The main reason why Wolfsberger got rid of Pfeifenberger was the turgid football played under him. For many years, the Wolves have become synonymous with a physical brand of football and Ilzer's main goal will be to make his new side far more pleasing to the eye than they have been over the recent years.

Target

Their goal will be to stay as far away from danger as possible, but their new manager will also be expected to get them to play attacking football.
