Crewe spent the majority of the 2013/14 season battling against the drop, but eventually managed to escape relegation by the skin of their teeth. Despite seeing his side struggling for large parts of their league campaign, Steve Davis stuck to his attacking principles, and eventually saw his side reaping their rewards. The Alex are one of the most likeable clubs in League One, as they stick to their philosophy of playing attractive football and promoting youth, but they keep struggling with finances, and therefore have to rely on the loan market to make up for some of the shortcomings of their squad. The latest youth school product who left is Max Clayton, who is currently trying to get himself a contract with Wolverhampton, although the young striker's departure will not be too much of a blow, as he spent the majority of the previous season on the sidelines due to an injury. Most of the players who left during the summer played bit-part roles last season, but the Alex also suffered one enormous blow, as Arsenal loanee Chuks Aneke left the club, and will not be joining them again, having left the Gunners to join Dutch side Zulte Waregem. Aneke was Crewe's top scorer and arguably best player over the summer, and the Alex simply do not seem to have a player who can compensate for the lack of goals that will certainly be caused by his departure. Another problem is that their squad, which was never the biggest, is now even smaller than it was last season due to the sheer number of players who left, but situation on this front could improve, as Davis has only started signing players a few days ago, with Marcus Haber and Chris Atkinson both being recent signings.
