Magdeburg is back in the second-tier after romping to the Liga 3 title last season. It was a stunning turnaround from the previous campaign, where for long spells they were battling to survive relegation to the regional league. Coach Christian Titz has been the catalyst for the club's rise, with Magdeburg transformed since he took charge in February 2021. The supporters can be optimistic with Titz in charge, they can find their feet well in the second division. Magdeburg has of course had to strengthen in the close season to be well equipped for the step up in class. The loss of key defender Tobias Muller to Paderborn would have hurt, but young centre-backs Tim Stappmann and Jamie Lawrence will provide competition, while the experienced Malcolm Cacutuala has joined from Erzgebirge. Right midfielder Mo El Hankouri is also hoping to hit the ground running after signing from Groningen, Silas Gnaka also comes in at left-back and could be a good bit of business. Paderborn has also stolen regulars Sirlord Conteh and Raphael Obermair from their clutches, but key winger Baris Atik and striker Luca Schuler remain at the club, which is a positive moving forward. Under Titz expect Magdeburg to be a match for anyone on their day, they have an abundance of team spirit in the ranks and play good football. The area of concern is the step up in class from the third division, the club struggled the last time they were here and will have to react well to defeats, something they weren’t used to last season.

Target

Survival will be the main aim for Magdeburg but a good start could see them do better than expected, there is no doubt they can spring a surprise or two.
