Peterborough secured automatic promotion from League One last season by finishing 2nd. This ended an eight year stay in English football’s third tier. The most eye-catching summer arrival is that of Grant. The creative central midfielder was a key man last season in a Lincoln side beaten in the League One play-off final. He scored 17 goals (11 were penalties) and was named in the team of the year. Knight and Marriott have been brought back to the club. Knight was an ever-present for Wycombe last season, Marriott had an injury-hit 2020/21 campaign, in his previous spell at the Posh during the 2017/18 season, he scored 33 goals. Peterborough have managed to keep their key players from last season including League One Golden Boot winner Jonson Clarke-Harris and dynamic central midfielder Jack Taylor. Departed loanee Brown was a regular starter but his absence is covered by the signing of Grant. Darren Ferguson gets another crack at the Championship with Peterborough. His first attempt at keeping them up lasted three months before he was sacked, the second time they were relegated after two seasons. Like all Ferguson’s Peterborough teams this one has plenty of goals in it, they hit 83 last season but also had the fourth best defence. What the players lack is Championship experience and they were prone to alarming slumps in form last season.

Target

Survival. Peterborough under Ferguson are never dull. Expect an entertaining battle against relegation which could go down to the wire.
