Antwerp failed to defend their title last term. The fact that they had to balance between big matches in the groups of the Champions League with domestic games saw them struggle. Still, Antwerp finished the regular season in third place and they looked in a very good position to challenge for medals. However, poor play-off run which brought 8 defeats in 10 post-season games saw Antwerp finish dead last in Play-off I. Coach Van Bommel was released after the disappointing end to the season. Jonas de Roeck is his replacement and the new gaffer seems happy to continue using the preferred by his predecessor 4-2-3-1 shape. The 2 main departures so far this summer have been in defence. The main core of players remains put for now, so De Roeck is likely to be working with largely the same squad. The wonderkid George Ilenikhena shone last season only age 17. Now a year older, turns 18 in August, he could be given even greater role. His ability to play in multiple attacking positions makes him a dangerous joker. Experienced centre-back Björn Engels missed the entire last season injured. However, he’s expected to be an option again this term. If he regains most of his form from before the knee surgery he could form a formidable partnership with captain Alderweireld in the heart of the defence. The left-back Ayrton Costa arrives from South America and he is expected to become the new regular in the role now De Laet ended his career. Young inner midfielder Pierre Dwomoh spent the entire last season out on loan. He showed promise and now is expected to be part of the squad often.

Target

Aim at the medals. Might find it hard to secure a top 6 finish though as the depth of the squad is not good.
