Setúbal is becoming an expert team in saving themselves from relegation just in time. Last season was the fourth consecutive time that Vitória had to fight bravely to avoid getting out of top flight football. The club’s financial difficulties doesn’t allow much more, and this season it is very likely that the team will continue struggling. A significant part of their squad has left, and mostly cause a lot of them were at ‘Sado’ on loan from bigger clubs. Patrick, João Teixeira and João Amaral returned to Benfica (only to be loaned out to yet another club), while Wallyson returned to Sporting. Yohan Tavares spent only six months at Setúbal; despite the great impact he had on the team after arriving on January, he is now leaving too. Goalscorer Edinho and highly versatile Arnold were also two of the departures the fans may miss during the next season. Perhaps the most missed player will be the striker André Pereira who was having a rise of form during his 6 months loan spell from Porto. The club approached the transfers market with two signature signings: experienced league players combined with relatively unknown Brazilian talent coming on loan. Setúbal continues their policy of having a significant amount of players on loan, but now they made the clever move not to get them from domestic rivals, as they would be missing some important players in some games. Joel Pereira arrives from Manchester United to finally try to have a full season in first team status, now in Setúbal’s goal. Mano and Artur Jorge in defence; Rúben Micael, Nuno Valente and Éber Bessa in the midfielder; Zequinha, Jhonder and Alex Freitas in the attack are well known Portuguese league faces that should be safe bets for the next season. Savio, Cascado and Hildeberto as some of the unknown players the club his putting their faith on to cause some impact.

Saving their skin from relegation, hopefully sooner than in recent seasons will be the realistic expectations for the club, this season. Setúbal needs some more investment in order to start having slightly more ambitious goals than that.
