Mikel Arteta’s second full season in charge at Arsenal proved to be something of a rollercoaster. The Gunners came close to securing a top-four spot but they narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification due to their lack of consistency, fielding the Premier League’s youngest average starting line-up last season. Alexandre Lacazette decided against penning a new deal and departed on a free transfer, but Arsenal strengthened their attack with the signing of Gabriel Jesus. Versatile midfielder Oleksandr Zinchenko also joined from Man City, while talented midfielder Fábio Vieira arrived from Porto. The Gunners managed to beef up their midfield after suffering last year due to injuries to starting midfielders. They also found a solid backup for injury-prone left-back Kieran Tierney in Zinchenko. With the arrival of Jesus, Arsenal boast one of the most talented Premier League attacking tridents consisting of the Brazilian striker, his compatriot Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka. Arsenal possess a youthful squad, lacking experienced men to lead on the pitch, their oldest player being goalkeeper Matt Turner (28) who’s just joined from the MLS. The Gunners struggled to find consistency last year due to that lack of experience, which may cost them this season too.

Target

Arsenal’s goal is to finish in the top four and clinch Champions League qualification for the first time in eight years. They came close to do last season but had the advantage of not playing European football. This year they will participate in the Europa League.
