Chicago had difficult last season and, after achieving only 10 wins in the 34 rounds – 9 draws and 15 defeats –, they finished well outside play-off contention. The main issues were in attack with Chicago’s 39 scored goals the second lowest tally in the entire Eastern Conference. Developing young players and then cashing on them had been a trend for Chicago lately. They did the same in the off-season with over $30 million received from the sales of goalkeeper Slonina and striker Duran. Coach Hendrikson is yet to spend any of this cash. The other notable departure from the off-season was that of the main right-back Sekulic. He was already replaced though with Souquet, on a free transfer, the only major new signing so far. It seems Chicago will dedicate the 2023 campaign once more on developing their many youngsters and trying to accumulate cash from their sales. There is a bunch of Mexican teenagers in the squad and at least 1-2 of them are likely to become regular starters this season. Also the 19-year-old keeper Brady is expected to become the new number one. There are still several experienced Europeans to form the backbone of the squad. In defence captain Czichos remains indispensable. The same is valid for the main creative force in midfield Shaqiri. Up front the main target-man Przybylko hopes to have a much better season than the last one. Of course, it can’t be ignored that Chicago sit on tens of millions of unspent transfer money. This might see a big name or two joining the squad soon, or at some stage during the campaign.

Target

With so many young players this is shaping to be a rebuilding season for the Fire and another year of them missing the play-offs.
