Last year was the final year of the Jose Bordalas project at Getafe, with that project having run its course. Bordalas’ style was a defence-first and physical style of football and it worked well for Getafe for several years, but it is a draining approach and it seemed that 2020/21 was the year when not as many players bought into it. It was time for a change for Bordalas and Getafe, so they parted ways and former Getafe coach Michel was brought in. He achieved relative success before, between 2009 and 2011, and adds a new way of working. While his teams are also usually focused on defence first, Michel isn’t as extreme as Bordalas. This could, then, be a smart and steady transition. Getafe have also made a lot of changes in personnel this summer. They have strengthened in all departments, such as with the signing of centre-back Stefan Mitrovic, winger Vitolo and striker Jose Macias. They also signed Carles Alena to a permanent deal and have so far managed to keep star winger Marc Cucurella. They were at risk of relegation up until the final couple of weeks of last season and avoiding the drop will be Getafe’s ambition once again. They’ll hope to do so a little more comfortably, though, with a greater margin to spare.

Target

Avoiding relegation. Getafe’s aim is usually simply to stay up, even more so in a transition year like this.
