Following their relegation back down to Spain’s second division at the end of the 2019/20 season, RCD Mallorca had quite an overhaul of their squad, bringing in many new players and hiring a new coach in Luis García Plaza. After a slow start, RCD Mallorca became one of the best teams in the division and their excellent defence led the way. They didn’t score too many goals, but their defence was strong enough that they managed to win many matches by narrow margins. They had 11 1-0 wins and even six 0-0 draws, which highlights the kind of form they displayed throughout the year. Their main strength, therefore, is their defence and they’ve been able to keep that unit together, with centre-backs Antonio Raíllo and Martin Valjent both staying on. The problem they have is in attack as Abdón Prats was their top scorer with just 10 goals. They’ve signed veteran forward Ángel Rodríguez this summer to try to help in that department, but it remains to be seen if that’ll work. There has been quite a lot of personnel turnover in the off-season, but the players RCD Mallorca lost were mostly fringe players. So, this squad should be better than it was last year. Plus, they’ll have home fans back and RCD Mallorca always have a decent home advantage anyway because they are on an island and that makes it a long away trip for almost all of their opponents. Whether all of that is enough to stay up, however, remains to be seen.

Target

Avoiding relegation. When RCD Mallorca came up in 2019, they were relegated straight back down in 2019/20. They then managed to achieve a bounce back promotion and the aim this year is simply to make it stick this time.
