Finished 6th last season, after a disastrous start (a lot of draws) and a depressive final 11 rounds (just 2 wins). Playing the Gaúcho State Championships Finals with arch-rivals Internacional. Early elimination from Libertadores in April meant the end of an almost 5-years partnership between Grêmio and coach Renato Portaluppi. Tricolores will have their first season without the iconic coach sitting on the bench. Tiago Nunes will be in charge of re-igniting the flame of this powerful Brazilian side, after 18 months of poor displays. Nunes is a modern coach, but failed to achieve any positives at Corinthians after an amazing work with Athlético PR. Having the idol Douglas Costa back to the club as he is 30 years old is a major achievement for Tricolores. The left-footed international will try to bring Grêmio up to a top position. Young star Pepê has been heavily linked with a move to Porto and may not be around this season, even if he is starting it as a full Grêmio player. Rafinha and Thiago Santos are also well established names that will bring experience to a team that always brings young new talent to the pitch every season. Kannemann and Geromel will remain forming a strong back partnership. Midfielders Matheus Henrique and Jean Pyerre are, along with Pepê, the club's most valuable assets.

Target

Having been out so early from Libertadores this year means that Grêmio will be looking more seriously to domestic league than ever. If Douglas Costa is completely focused and Pepê gets to stay one more season, there's a slight chance of Grêmio mounting a competition to the title.
