It was a hard 2023 for the fallen giants Göteborg. They finished only a point above the bottom 3 in the end with W8 D10 L12 record and were lucky to avoid relegation. Only the bottom 2 teams recorded fewer wins and also only 3 teams scored fewer than Göteborg's 33 league goals in 30 games in 2023. Survival was possible only thanks to a series of good results in the final 2 months of the season. This improved form coincided with the appointment of coach Askou in late July and after proving his credentials the manager was given a long-term deal this winter. For nearly a full decade now the financial problems of the ex-giants mean they struggle to compete. This winter saw the team’s big star in defence and arguably the main reason why survival was possible in 2023 Johan Bångsbo sold. Winger Markovic also had to leave as Göteborg simply couldn’t afford his high wage. The same financial restriction mean that Göteborg had to stay quiet on the transfer front. The only new signing likely to become a regular starter straight away is Oscar Pettersson. Göteborg have a small squad and it will be vital for everyone to stay healthy if Blue-and-Whites would want to stay out of trouble again this season.

Target

Mid-table finish is the best they can hope for. Will need to be consistent to achieve it.
