Adam Phillips return for another season on loan from Burnley is a real coup for Derek Adams and Morecambe. The midfield playmaker was outstanding for the Shrimps in the two months before the Covid-19 pandemic struck and drew the season to a premature end. He will miss the start of the campaign due to suspension but will play a key role this season. Like many clubs they will have to carefully navigate the choppy waters which come as a result of the pandemic but the appointment of Adams looks a shrewd one. There will have been trepidation following the departure of Jim Bentley, who was the longest-serving manager in English football before being enticed away by AFC Fylde. Adams was unceremoniously sacked by Plymouth Argyle, having taken them into League One, and his uncompromising style was soon in evidence as he jettisoned clubs legends Barry Roche and Kevin Ellison. The former is now goalkeeping coach but the latter has left with a somewhat bitter taste in his mouth. For once they haven’t lost a crucial player during the close season and the additions of full-back Kelvin Mellor, centre-back Harry Davis and winger Ben Pringle bring plenty of Football League experience to the Globe Arena.

Target

Top half. The Shrimps will again be one of the favourites for relegation but with Adams at the helm, they can aim a little higher.
