Paderborn returned back to the Bundesliga after a gap of four years during which they suffered the indignity of two straight relegations only to bounce back to secure back to back promotions, including finishing second in the 2.Bundesliga last season thanks to a superior goal difference. Paderborn have been weakened somewhat over the summer after having sold Bernard Tekpetey and Philipp Klement, with the duo being their top two scorers in the 2.Bundesliga last season. Paderborn have done well to hold on to majority of their players key to their promotion push with Lukas Boeder being the only other departee who was somewhat regular in the match squad last season. Khiry Shelton will be almost like a new signing for Paderborn with the American attacker limited to just two appearances last season before suffering an injury. Paderborn have also brought in Laurent Jans and Gerrit Holtmann on loan deals, with the latter offering Bundesliga experience after featuring for Mainz last season. Paderborn have not spent in the transfer window, limiting themselves to free transfers of players, many of whom do not have Bundesliga experience, and loan deals. They endured a disastrous campaign in their only previous appearance in the Bundesliga back in 2014-15, ending at the bottom of the table and, with the club expected to face another difficult season, they will need to do well if they are to avoid the drop this time around.
