Bielefeld were consistent throughout their campaign last season and fully deserved their promotion. They eventually won the second tier by a comfortable 10 points. The newly promoted club have been busy bolstering their squad in the close season to give them a good chance of survival. They have been shrewd in the transfer market, having made five free transfers and two loan signings, these include central defender Mike van der Hoorn from Swansea, full-backs Jacob Laursen and Nathan de Medina and winger Christian Gebauer. Coach Uwe Neuhaus has also kept the core of his squad that did so well last season, the only regular to depart was Jonathan Clauss to Lille. In Neuhaus, Bielefeld have an experienced coach who should make them difficult to beat, a quality that worked well last season with the team strong in defence, only conceding 30 times in 34 rounds. Going forward they also have quality in abundance, attackers Fabian Klos and Andreas Voglsammer scored 33 goals between them and will no doubt be a threat again. The area of concern for Bielefeld could be their inexperience in the division and the step up in quality. Their last venture into the top division back in 2008/09 ended in a bottom placed finish and they will be keen to avoid a repeat of that.

Target

Survival. It will no doubt be a tough test for Bielefeld this season and you expect them to be in and around the relegation mix, but they will be a stubborn outfit under Neuhaus so expect them to spring a surprise or two.
