Making the playoffs for only the second time in their history, Toronto FC would go on to be crowned MLS Cup champions in 2017, narrowly edging past the Seattle Sounders in a repeat of last year’s final. Greg Vanney’s men were sensational for the entire length of the season, and thoroughly deserved their title. Not only did the Canadian side set a new record for the most points earned in a single MLS season – 69. They also had the best offense in the entire league, with an incredible 74 goals scored, while also registering the second best defensive performance, conceding just 37. Jozy Altidore and Sebastian Giovinco would once again prove to be the star performers, combining for over 30 goals and 12 assists between them. Victor Vasquez would too have a brilliant campaign, netting 8 goals for himself, while capturing 16 assists. Just when you thought that Toronto’s squad couldn’t get any better, the reds have only gone and strengthened even further in the off-season. Attacking midfielder, Ager Aketxe, comes in from Athletic Bilbao and will most definitely add an extra spark to the midfield. Former PSG star, Gregory van der Wiel, meanwhile comes into the squad in a move that will bolster the reds in their right back position. Van der Wiel comes into the squad as a direct replacement for Steven Beitashour, who departed for LA FC a number of weeks ago. Other losses for Toronto include that of Benoit Cheyrou, who has now retired, and Armando Cooper, who signed for Universidad de Chile.

Target

Toronto will without a doubt be attempting to defend their championship.
