Celta Vigo had a poor start last year, but soon recovered and then spent the second half of the season firmly in middle. Over the course of the second half of last term, they were never higher than 10th and never lower than 13th, finishing 11th in the end. It was a so-so campaign in what was coach Eduardo Coudet’s first full season in charge, with Iago Aspas once again the key man in the 4-1-3-2 formation as he produced 18 goals and provided six assists, meaning he was directly involved in 56 percent of Celta Vigo’s 43 goals. It was a decent campaign for Celta Vigo and they finished roughly where they should have, given their squad. So, the priority this summer has been to improve the squad and there has been an overhaul. Barring the newly promoted sides, Celta Vigo’s squad is the one that has changed the most from 2021/22 to 2022/23. This squad overhaul has been engineered by Luis Campos, the renowned sporting director who is currently working as an advisor for both Celta Vigo and PSG, which is quite a coup for the Spanish side. They have brought in some really interesting players, such as Williot Swedberg or Oscar Rodriguez and will hope they can improve the team and that Aspas can stay as prolific as ever. Coach Coudet will also hope these squad changes provide more depth overall. This was the main weakness last year, as there were so few changes to the starting XI week to week and there was a big dropoff whenever he did rotate.
