Girona may have only finished sixth in the second division table last season, but they repeated the trend of recent years by winning promotion through the playoffs as the sixth-placed team. Elche and Rayo Vallecano also did so after sixth-placed finishes in recent years and managed to stay up. In their bid to stay in the top tier, Girona have used their connections within the City Football Group to bring in some top talents. They’ve seen a lot of loan deals expire, but have managed to secure fresh agreements for really good players like Yangel Herrera, Yan Couto and Taty Castellanos to join the team. Castellanos is a particularly impressive acquisition, as he was the MLS top scorer in 2021 and also in 2022 before his departure. He’ll partner Cristhian Stuani up front and they should form a deadly duo. The defence isn’t bad, but losing Pol Lozano and Jairo Izquierdo is a blow and Girona could certainly do with another reinforcement for the back line. They’ll then have to hope that their coach Michel can have a better experience in the top tier this time than he has in the past. He has previously won promotions for Rayo Vallecano and Huesca in the past, but was sacked by both teams midway through the subsequent season.

Target

Survival. Girona’s sole objective is to stay up. It won’t be easy, especially since they couldn’t start planning their squad until late June, when they won the promotion play-offs. But, if they can bring in one or two more reinforcements before deadline day, they’ll have a chance.
