Real Madrid are coming from the ultimate position of strength, having won the LaLiga title and the Champions League last season, in addition to the Spanish Super Cup. They didn’t always look like the best team in Europe last year, but they were the most decisive. Thibaut Courtois and Karim Benzema had the best seasons of their careers and Real Madrid will hope they can repeat that. They did want to strengthen with Kylian Mbappe, but that wasn’t possible so they have only brought in Antonio Rudiger for central defence and Aurelien Tchouameni for the midfield. This year’s squad, therefore, should be at least as good as, if not better, than last year’s. There aren’t many weaknesses at Real Madrid, but age could be a concern, especially with Benzema turning 35 and Luka Modric turning 37 this season. Yet, Real Madrid have depth and have a winning mentality throughout the squad, so will enter this campaign full of confidence, starting with the UEFA Super Cup match against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Target

Retain the league and win another trophy or two. The objective at Real Madrid is always to win everything. Being realistic, they’ll aspire to retain their league title, which is easier said than done since they haven’t won back-to-back league championships since 2006/07 and 2007/08. They’ll also aim for another deep Champions League run and to win as many as they can of the UEFA Super Cup, Spanish Super Cup, Club World Cup and Copa del Rey.
