Coritiba were able to fend off relegation right at the end of the 2016 Brazilian Serie A season, which will be good experience for them because they’ll surely be involved in the relegation battle again. Coach Carpegiani may have saved the team from the drop, but poor 2017 results saw him kicked out the door, with a Brazilian Cup elimination at the hands of Serie C side Agremiação Sportiva Arapiraquense proving a particular embarrassment. Yet interim coach Pachequino has steadied the ship a little and the team reached the final of the Paranaense State Championship, defeating Atletico Paranaense 3-0 in the first leg. Anderson and Henrique Almeida have been added to a squad which did have some existing talent, such as Kleber and Ruy, but losing Colin Kazim-Richards and Raphael Veiga was a blow and Coritiba’s prospects do not look great. They’ll be relying on their interim coach working wonders and on Kleber staying fit, neither of which is certain, if even likely. This could, therefore, be a long and hard season for the team and they’ll be thrilled if they can finish above the drop zone once again.

Target

Survival would make the 2017 campaign a success for Coritiba and it wouldn’t even be too much of a shock if they do get sucked into the bottom four.
