2016 was a good year for Gremio, with the team claiming the Brazilian Cup. They finished ninth in the league and although they were never really in contention at the top, they did possess the potential to finish a little bit higher but they rested players in several of the season’s final weeks, preferring to focus on the cup competition. Renato Gaucho was the coach who led the team to that cup triumph, but he has not enjoyed a positive start to 2017, with the team struggling in the Copa Libertadores. Part of the reason for the struggles may have to do with the fact that the team sold Walace and Marcelo Hermes to Hamburg and Benfica in the off-season and they’ve struggled to replace them, with 20-year-old Beto Da Silva the only player who was brought in for a fee. Luan may even follow his former teammates to Europe as teams are believed to be interested in the striker and that would be a further blow if he does depart. If they can keep hold of him, though, then there are signs that he could form a deadly strike partnership with new arrival Lucas Barrios, a player Gremio have been after for some time and who they finally signed in the off-season. The club could make progress this season and will always be competitive at home at the Gremio Arena, but how much progress they can make probably depends on their transfer dealings.

Target


A push for the top six is not out of the question for Gremio this season, but they could struggle to improve on their ninth placed finish enough to claim one of those Copa Libertadores spots.
