2016 wasn’t the best of years for Corinthians, who finished seventh and who, therefore, missed out on a Copa Libertadores place. Losing coach Tite to the national team job severely affected them and it took them some time to adequately replace him. It now seems that they have found a talented successor, with the young Fabio Carile having done an impressive job since being handed the reins. The squad may not have been strengthened much given the club’s financial woes, but he has installed a conservative and hard-working style of play which the team has adapted to and he is trusting youth players and enjoying the rewards of having done so. The fact that some star players left for Europe may actually have helped Corinthians to become more of a team and less of a bunch of individuals. Although Corinthians have already been knocked out of the Brazilian Cup, they won the Sao Paulo State Championship - one of the most difficult ones in the country - by beating Sao Paulo FC and Ponte Preta en route. That bodes well for this league campaign, while the fact they don’t have the Brazilian Cup to worry about could further increase their focus on the league. The fact the Corinthians Arena can become an intimidating venue on its day should also provide a boost to the team.

This team still has too many deficiencies to challenge for a league title, but a return to the Copa Libertadores is a possibility. That’s what they’ll hope to achieve in 2017.
