Having won the Brazilian Serie A title in 2016, Palmeiras’ goal in 2017 is to retain it and they have an excellent chance of doing so. They may have lost their wonderkid Gabriel Jesus to Manchester City in January, but that transfer brought in plenty of cash for Palmerias’ hierarchy to work with, in addition to the revenues from their packed-out stadium, and they appear to have invested it well. Most significantly, Palmeiras have invested in squad depth, which will be important for them this season as they will also be competing in the Copa Libertadores, while they’ll also hope for success in the Brazilian Cup. As for the big names to have come in through the door, they didn’t get much bigger than Atlético Nacional’s Alejandro Guerra and Borja, with Palmeiras spending big to prise the playmaker and striker away from the Colombian side. Although Palmeiras’ squad looks to be as talented as last year’s, if not more so, question marks do remain over the dugout. Eduardo Baptista has come in to replace the legendary Cuca and performances in pre-season have been inconsistent, with a Paulista State Championship semi-final elimination coming as a bit of a wake-up call. Palmeiras definitely have the potential to retain their title, but it might not be as easy a title win as last year, when they were only ever half-heartedly challenged by Flamengo.

Target

As reigning champions, the objective is to retain the title. Yet Palmeiras also desperately want to win the Copa Libertadores and it's possible that the continental competition could prove a distraction.
