Union Berlin enjoyed a successful debut campaign in the Bundesliga, defying all expectations as they finished well clear of the relegation zone and, had they not suffered a mid-season slump, they would have finished even higher in the league table. Berlin and coach Urs Fischer will now need to ensure that they do not suffer from second season syndrome that has been the bane of a number of promoted teams. The club though have played it safe in the transfer window with Marius Bulter the only outlay so far as they converted his loan move into a permanent transfer. Their biggest acquisition though is that of Max Kruse on a free transfer with the attacker having enjoyed a successful stint with Werder Bremen before moving on to Fenerbache last season. Rafal Gikiewicz is the only biggest departure in the transfer window and Berlin have brought in Andreas Luthe to replace him in the lineup. The overall quality of the squad is still not up to the level of some of their nearest rivals and, with the surprise element gone, Berlin will find it difficult to repeat their comfortable finish from last season.

Survival remains the key for Union Berlin though it may be difficult to replicate their comfortable campaign from last season
