There is a real sense of uncertainty and trepidation for Morecambe as they return to life back in League Two. Derek Adams guided the Shrimps to an unlikely promotion in 2021 and then returned to keep them in League One in 2022. He was unable to keep them up last season however, with off-field issues making the job virtually impossible. The club was put up for sale in September 2022 by owners Bond Group yet a takeover still hasn’t been completed despite interest from Sarbjot Johal's Sarb Capital Limited. They have failed to satisfy the EFL that they have the required funds. Meanwhile the players wages were paid late several times last season, and strike action was even considered at one point. Given this context it was remarkable that they took it to the final day of the season. Just six players were left under contract at the end of the season. Striker Cole Stockton, whose last season’s form almost saw them escape relegation, has joined Burton Albion, this summer and his departure is no less of a blow despite being expected. Goalkeeper Connor Ripley’s move to Port Vale is another bitter pill to swallow, as is midfield playmaker Dan Crowley’s switch to promoted Notts County. It’s something of a surprise that Adams remains in post. He endured significant pressures and stress last season and no-one would have criticised him for walking away. It is a remarkable show of loyalty, especially with the ownership issues remaining unresolved. Adams has made several signings this summer, all on one-year deals. The return of Burnley striker Michael Mellon on another season-long loan is perhaps the most exciting.

Target

Survival. Keeping Morecambe in the Football League will be Adams primary objective and he has the experience to do so.
