It would be fair to say it has been a rather underwhelming summer for Swindon Town fans so far. It is something of a tread as they endured a rather underwhelming 2022/23 season. Having lost Head Coach Ben Garner following defeat in the play-off semi-final last summer, successor Scott Lindsay failed to win over the fans during the first half of the campaign and left for Crawley Town. Results and performances got worse under his replacement Jody Morris, with the club cutting their losses and sacking the former Chelsea player before the season’s end. Owner Clem Morfuni saved the club from extinction two years ago, so has plenty of credit in the bank. He has turned to the experience of Michael Flynn in the hope of putting in a much better showing this time around. Flynn will be hoping to mend his diminishing reputation following a poor season with Walsall. The loss of Wales international Jonny Williams to Gillingham is a real blow, even if his departure was expected. He was the one player capable of exciting the fans with his skills. Goalkeeper Sol Brynn impressed during his season-long loan from Middlesbrough whilst the versatile Ellis Iandolo has opted to join his former boss Garner at Colchester United. At the time of writing Flynn has made just two signings, Murphy Mahoney replacing Brynn on a season-long loan from Queens Park Rangers and creative midfielder Dan Kemp signing on a similar deal. The latter enjoyed a very impressive loan spell despite being relegated with Hartlepool United last season and is exactly the kind of signing the Robins need. Given the amount of recruitment still required, it will be difficult to judge their promotion credentials until the conclusion of the transfer window.
