Northampton have become a bit of a yo-yo club over the recent years, with their most recent promotion coming with an impressive play-off performance that saw them produce a comeback to beat Cheltenham before crushing Exeter in the final. They had an upturn in fortunes in the second half of the campaign, with this coinciding with the arrival of Callum Morton from WBA, with the striker becoming a reliable source of goals for them and making a major difference in their season. He has since returned to his parent club, but their problems do not stop there, as several other regulars have been snapped up by other sides or failed to agree contract extensions. In fact, only five of the eleven players who started the play-off final are still at the club. Needless to say, this amount of departures has also forced their hand in the transfer market and they have made several signings, out of which only Joseph Mills, Cian Bolger and Joe Nuttall are well-known League One names. They have sold highly-rated defender Charlie Goode for a fee and not all of that has been re-invested in the squad. Further signings are thought to be imminent. The Cobblers will need to spend wisely, as their current squad is clearly weaker than the one that only won promotion via the play-offs last season.

Target

The Cobblers will be pleased as long as they manage to avoid a swift return to the fourth tier.
