Football Season Guide

Ever since the Red Bull drinks company founded a team in Leipzig in 2009 it was just a matter of time before they reached the big time. After two seasons in the second division Ralf Hasenhüttl’s side managed the jump into the top league after finishing second in the league behind Freiburg. The target for the club long term will be to start competing at the top end of the league on a regular basis but before they do that Hassenhüttl will have to make sure they have a solid grounding the league. By and large the coach looks set to keep faith with the squad which won promotion to the Bundesliga as just a few players have come in or left over the summer. From those who have left none were really important members of the team though Anthony Jung was one of the longer serving squad members. From those who have joined Timo Werner looks the most exciting after he left relegated VfB Stuttgart. He remains one of the most talented young German players at the moment and will get plenty of game time with Leipzig. The return of Martin Hinteregger from loan and the signing of Benno Schmitz and Marius Müller are both to add a bit more depth to their options at the back. The coaching staff and board are likely to give their side until Christmas to prove they can cut it at the higher level, though a few Christmas buys will not be out of the question should they be struggling at that point. The squad does have a few quality young players though who will be desperate to prove themselves on the big stage so they should be able to hold their own against the teams in the bottom half at least. RB Leipzig are not the most popular side in the league due to their connection to big business and they will find it tough at away grounds as the fans will likely turn against them.
