After two failed playoff campaigns under Steve Cooper, Swansea's manager moved on on the eve of the 2021-22 season. Russell Martin was brought in from MK Dons to provide renewed energy with his possession-hungry style which, when successful, was entertaining for Swans fans to witness. However, inconsistency limited Swansea's success last season as they finished 15th, 14 points off the playoff places. One of the successes of last season was new arrival Flynn Downes but, after an impressive debut campaign, the midfielder has been lost to Premier League side West Ham. Joe Allen's return after leaving for Liverpool a decade ago has softened the blow in the central midfield, whilst star player Joel Piroe has been retained. Jamie Paterson's future has also been secured, with the Swans able to boast a formidable front three of Piroe, Paterson and Michael Obafemi, who began to flourish towards the end of last season. Martin has been able to enjoy a full pre-season with Swansea this year, something that can only benefit them in their efforts to adapt to their manager's methods. However, after the departure of Cyrus Christie, Swansea are yet to replace the free agent at right wing-back as things stand, whilst a lack of strength in depth throughout the squad could hinder City should injuries begin to mount up.

Target

An improved top-half finish should be expected, and also realistic, for Swansea this season, and a playoff push is certainly not out of the question should injuries be kind to them.
