Barnsley survived by the skin of their teeth last season thanks to a stoppage time winner on the final day and the confirmation of Wigan’s 12-point deduction. Gerhard Struber brought positivity and results after he was appointed in November and the retention of him as manager is a major piece of successful summer business. So far, the only outgoings have been mainly on the fringes of the squad. The Tykes have managed to fight off interest in key players Alex Mowatt, Cauley Woodrow, Conor Chaplin and Jacob Brown. There have been two additions to the squad with Dominik Frieser being brought in from Austrian side LASK Linz on a permanent basis to provide threat down the flanks. Meanwhile, full-back Kilian Ludewig has rejoined the club on loan after a successful spell at the club last season. Struber managed to implement an effective defensive formula in the second half of last season as they conceded just 15 goals in their last 17 Championship matches. Rediscovering this steel at the back will be key if they are to avoid another relegation battle.

Target

Survival will be the main aim once again but if they can pick up from where they left off last season a comfortable mid-table finish is achievable.
