Chelsea got off to a great start last season, but they experienced several highs and lows under Frank Lampard, who was finally replaced with Thomas Tuchel in January. The German tactician completely transformed the Blues and turned them into one of the most solid teams in Europe. Under Tuchel, Chelsea lost just three of their 19 Premier League games to clinch a Champions League position on the last round. They also reached the FA Cup final, where they were defeated to Leicester City, but they managed to win the Champions League after overcoming favourites Manchester City. Chelsea have not been particularly active in terms of signings this summer, as they have only acquired the services of Marcus Bettinelli on free transfer to replace outgoing Willy Caballero as their third-choice goalkeeper next season. Meanwhile, they parted ways with Fikayo Tomori and Victor Moses, both of whom made their moves to AC Milan and Spartak Moscow permanent and offloaded Olivier Giroud, who also joined the Italian side. Boasting last season’s second-best defensive record, Tuchel’s three-man backline is their main stength, while Édouard Mendy was solid in goal in the last stretch of the 2020/21 campaign. Meanwhile, N’Golo Kante shined in the Champions League and was named the final’s player of the match. The Frenchman was even in discussion for the Ballon D'or prize heading to the Euro, where his national team failed to impress. Chelsea have a strong squad, with no particular weaknesses, but should they sign a quality striker to provide Werner and Havertz with competition upfront, they could be considered as front-runners to win the Premier League.
