Despite not being particularly active on the transfer market last summer, West Ham grew into the 2020/21 campaign and secured a Europa League place, in what can be regarded as an outstanding season for Moyes’ side. West Ham even had top-four aspirations at some point, but three defeats in four games from mid-April to early May saw them finish sixth ahead of Tottenham, Arsenal and Everton. The Hammers have made targeted moves this summer, as centre-back and goalkeeper positions needed to be strengthened and West Ham signed an experienced centre-back in Craig Dawson, as well as a solid shot-stopper in Alphonse Areola. Felipe Anderson returned to Lazio after failing to impress, but there have been no major departures for the time being apart from Jesse Lingard, who rediscovered his form during his loan spell at West Ham last season. Mainly using a 4-2-3-1 formation, Moyes turned this West Ham side into a solid team. Czechs Coufal and Soucek were both outstanding last season, while England international Declan Rice was key to West Ham’s success and the club will do what it takes to retain his services this summer. West Ham’s main strength is their midfield, where Soucek and Rice form an outstanding duo, one which was regarded as one of the finest last term. However, West Ham need strengthening in attack and they should also sign a midfielder who can cover for Rice and Soucek next season.

Target

Securing a top-half position. A positive run in the Europa League will also be welcomed by fans, but West Ham need to add depth to their squad to be competitive in both competitions.
