Despite the danger of relegation looming over Newcastle midway through the season, coach Bruce worked wonders and led the team to five victories in the last eight rounds to secure an unexpected 12th place. Newcastle rediscovered their form between April and May, with winter loanee Willock finding the back of the net in all of his last eight appearances. There are no big departures for the time being despite Newcastle having parted ways with fringe players Christian Atsu, Florian Lejeune, Andy Carroll, Henri Saivet and Yoshinori Muto. However, Newcastle fans are experiencing another quiet summer in terms of signings, as boardroom issues have prevented the club from strengthening the team for yet another transfer window. The Magpies have signed no player, but they are willing to sign Willock from Arsenal on a permanent deal. As they demonstrated in the last stretch of the season, Newcastle have the potential to become a compact side, one which frustrates opponents with their defensive-minded style of play under veteran coach Bruce. However, this team has many weaknesses. Callum Wilson is a solid starting option, but Newcastle should sign a striker to complement him in attack. They also need a creative midfielder, as they are missing a spark in the final third, and a centre-back who can help with building from the back.
