It was really a case of a missed opportunity for Genk in 2022/23. They led the division for much of the season and started the Champions playoffs in top spot. Their form dipped in the playoffs although they still could have won the title in the final match but Royal Antwerp dramatically denied them with a stoppage equaliser. There has been little change in the off season with Wouter Vrancken looking to build on a spectacular first campaign in charge. For the moment Genk have been able to hold on to their key men from last season with assist machine Tresor, solid centre-back Cuesta and influential captain Heynen still at the club. Samatta has left though, so a central striker is needed. There have been four additions to the playing squad so far; Kayembe and Van Crombrugge bring dependability and experience to the backline. Fadera, a standout performer for Zulte Waregem last season, and African talent Baah bring youth and flair to the attacking positions. Vrancken has forged a strong, solid team with an excellent spirit and togetherness. Their home league form was particularly impressive last season with 15 wins, three draws and only two defeats. Genk enjoyed such a fantastic campaign last season, in the early part they were a winning machine. It makes you wonder whether they can repeat the trick this time around. Also, they have the extra fixtures of European football to contend with.
