Mainz had a decent campaign last season, finishing in a respectable midtable position, though it could have been much more were it not for a late slump that saw them pick up just one point from final five games to finish ninth in the table. Mainz had targeted a top half finish last season and they just about managed it though at one time they looked to be readying for a late push for a European spot. The new season promises to be more of the same for Mainz who have not been very active in the transfer window. Their only outlay in the summer so far has been on Tom Krauß who will be providing depth in the center of the midfield. Sepp van den Berg has also been signed on loan from Liverpool but is unlikely to be a regular starter. Marcus Ingvartsen was their top scorer last season but Mainz have decided to cash in on the striker who completed a move to Nordsjaelland while Angelo Fulgini's loan to Lens was converted into a permanent move. Marlon Mustapha has also been sold while Mainz decided not to renew contracts of Aaron Martin, Pierre-Gabriel, Dahmen and Lucoqui, all of whom have been released. With no major arrivals or departures, it promises to be more of the same for Mainz this season though coach Bo Svensson will be hoping for better overall performances that may push his club closer to the European qualification spots.
