Freiburg have made significant progress under the leadership of coach Christian Streich and they once again qualified for Europe after finishing 5th in the table last time out. There will of course be a little disappointment that they narrowly missed out on qualification to the Champions League, but they coped admirably with the extra games and a relatively thin squad compared to others. There has been little activity during the summer with most of their squad still intact from last season. This is of course a positive for Freiburg but you feel more additions will be needed for them to push on any further. Goalkeeper Flekken has made the move to the Premier League with Brentford after some solid performances over the last few campaigns. Muller is an able replacement but may need his confidence built up after falling out of favour at his previous club Stuttgart. Young striker Adamu from Salzburg is the only other player through the door so far. He is versatile and could work well with fellow Austrian Gregoritsch up front. All-time top-scorer Peterson has hung up his boots and will be a loss in the dressing room but Freiburg still have plenty of experience and quality in the ranks. Doan, Gunther, Hofler, and Grifo have been consistent performers and this season shouldn’t be any different. Freiburg’s strength in depth could be questioned when they reach the business end of the campaign but some exciting young players are coming through. Schade has made the permanent switch to Brentford but Weißhaupt, Schmidt, and Rohl could feature more prominently.

Target

A top-six finish and decent run in both Europe and the DFB Pokal would be another successful season for Freiburg, anything more than that will be a massive achievement.
