Karlsruher had very difficult last season and only thanks to much improved displays in the final 5-6 rounds of the campaign managed to just about avoid relegation. The inability to win games was the main issue in 2019/20, but at least Karlsruher had the highest number of draws in the division and those points proved decisive after all. Christian Eichner took charge only as caretaker manager in February, he was assistant coach before that, but as he did well and saved the team Eichner was given the job permanently this summer. The COVID-break hit Karlsruher’s finances hard and this off-season had been difficult so far. Already saw 5 regulars leaving, with 3 of them released simply because their wages were too high. At least influential Gondorf made his stay permanent, while Kuster was signed to be the new main goalkeeper. Right now the outlook for the campaign ahead doesn’t look great for Karlsruher. With their financial situation critical it seems that Eichner will be asked to rely on players from the Academy to fill the gaps. Already 4 teenagers were promoted to the senior squad and when the schedule gets congested they will have to be providing rest for the main players. Philipp Hofmann was the only reliable goalscorer last term and it seems that once again Karlsruher will rely heavily on his contributions up front, with the striker one of the best at his position in this division. The heart of the midfield should also be very solid with Wanitzek and Gondorf in it. The obvious weakness once again is expected to be the defensive part of the displays, with Karlsruher lacking any depth at the back. Have just 1 typical right-back on the books and 2 of the 4 centre-backs in the current squad are only teenagers.

Target

Survival is the only goal, but if the financial situation doesn’t improve and considering the selling off of quality players the Blues might find it really hard to avoid bottom 3 finish.
