Last season was Freiburg’s most successful under long-term coach Christian Streich with the club qualifying for the Europa League after a sixth-place finish. It could have been even better for the Breisauger but they missed out on the top four after defeat on the final day and were beaten on penalties in the DFB Pokal final. It will be difficult for Freiburg to replicate the previous campaign with the addition of European football and the loss of key defender Nico Schlotterbeck. The young centre-back was a standout performer last season so it was no surprise that big hitters Dortmund came in for him. Although the loss of Schlotterbeck will hurt, Freiburg has sought to compensate for it with the signing of experienced international Matthias Ginter from Borussia Monchengladbach, this should allay any defensive worries but the lack of quality back-ups could be a concern. The addition of attacking players Daniel-Kofi Kyereh and Ritsu Doan should make Freiburg strong again on the offensive, both will add goals and can also drop into midfield areas and help. The defensive midfield, however, may need strengthening before the transfer window shuts. There is no pressure on Freiburg again this campaign, so they should continue to play with creative freedom under Streich. The strength in depth could be a potential problem with them now playing in three competitions.

Target

Top six - There is no ruling out another strong season from Freiburg but you feel their league form could be affected by European football, the Thursday and Sunday matches can trouble the best teams and the SCF don’t have the backing of a large squad to cope.
